Why Tank Truck Operators Need a Different Maintenance Approach

Every commercial vehicle needs preventive maintenance. Tank trucks need a different kind. The difference is not volume of maintenance — it is the specific failure modes that are unique to a vehicle that carries hazardous liquids, runs pump systems off a PTO, operates emergency shutoffs, and is required to pass a federal cargo tank inspection under 49 CFR Part 180 before it can legally carry product.

49 CFR 180.407 — Cargo Tank Inspection Requirements

  • Pressure relief valve test — Annually. Each valve opened, reseated, and verified to operate within specification pressure limits.
🔴 Critical — out-of-service trigger: A cargo tank with an overdue inspection under 49 CFR 180.407 cannot legally be filled and offered for transportation.
