The single most consequential equipment decision a propane distributor makes is tank size. Get it right and your fleet makes the most of every route-mile. Choosing a bobtail tank size is not primarily a truck decision — it is a route planning decision. The right size is determined by your route profile, your customer density, your fill station proximity, and your seasonal demand pattern.

Question 1: What Is Your Average Route Length and Stop Count?

A distributor running 12 to 18 residential stops per day in a suburban area with a fill station 20 miles away needs a different tank than one running 6 to 8 large agricultural accounts across 80 miles with a fill station 50 miles away. The shorter your return-to-fill distance, the smaller the tank you can efficiently run — because frequent reloading offsets the capacity advantage of a larger tank.

Residential accounts typically fill 250 to 500-gallon customer tanks. Commercial accounts may fill 500 to 2,000-gallon bulk tanks. Propane delivery is deeply seasonal — demand in January is fundamentally different from demand in July for most heating-focused operations. Size your bobtail for your peak-season requirements, not your average. Tank size affects maneuverability as directly as it affects capacity. A 5,000-gallon bobtail on a tandem axle is a very different vehicle to maneuver in a residential neighborhood than a 3,200-gallon single axle. Consider the tightest access point on your typical routes — rural driveways, suburban cul-de-sacs, commercial loading areas — and size your chassis accordingly. A truck that cannot reach the customer does not matter how large its tank is.

The Center of Gravity Problem — What Most Buyers Don't Ask About

The single most underappreciated safety and handling characteristic of a propane bobtail is how its center of gravity changes as the tank empties. A bobtail loaded to 85% has a higher center of gravity than the same truck at 20% — and this is not a static calculation; it changes on every delivery.

The tank diameter determines how high the center of gravity sits at a given load. A standard 80-inch diameter tank has a different center-of-gravity profile than a 72-inch diameter tank at the same volume. Operators running routes with challenging terrain, tight curves, or wet and icy roads should understand this — particularly in the first half of the route when the tank is full and the center of gravity is at its highest.

Baffles inside the tank slow the surge of propane from rear to front during braking and front to rear during acceleration. A standard bobtail typically has one or two baffles; specifications can call for additional baffles. For routes with significant grade changes or emergency braking requirements, baffle specification is worth discussing with your manufacturer.
