7 tips for choosing the right propane tank truck for your fleet

Introduction

A propane bobtail is one of the most operationally demanding vehicles a distributor runs. It carries a pressurized product, serves residential and commercial accounts with varying delivery volumes, operates year-round in all weather conditions, and may cover 150 to 300 miles per day during peak season. The truck you order has to be right before it leaves the factory — because the cost of a wrong specification compounds over every year of service.

These seven tips cover the decisions that separate a high-performing propane tank truck from one that creates operational friction every day.

Tip 1: Size the Tank to Your Largest Route, Not Your Average Route

Propane bobtail capacity runs from roughly 3,000 gallons for smaller residential trucks to 6,500 gallons for large commercial and agricultural delivery trucks. The instinct to order based on typical delivery volumes leads to a truck that's full when you need it most — peak winter demand, large commercial fills, or emergency deliveries.

Calculate your highest-volume delivery day in the past two years. That's your floor. Then add your realistic growth projection for the next five years. Order at that number. You'll carry partial loads on slow days, but you'll never leave a large account half-filled because you ran out of product.

Tip 2: Match the Meter Specification to Your Product and Account Mix

Propane meters are calibrated for specific temperature and pressure ranges. A meter that performs well on residential fills at moderate temperatures may drift on large commercial fills in cold weather, or on accounts at elevation with different product conditions.

Your meter specification should be confirmed against the actual range of conditions your drivers will encounter. This is not a generic choice — it's a calculation based on your operating territory and customer mix.

Tip 3: Specify the Pump for Your Duty Cycle, Not the Catalog Default

Propane bobtail pumps are rated by GPM and designed for specific duty cycles. A pump spec'd for 40 to 60 residential deliveries per day performs differently than one running 10 large commercial deliveries. The residential truck needs fast startup and shutdown with high cycle frequency. The commercial truck needs sustained throughput over longer delivery windows.

Confirm the pump specification against your actual delivery profile. Underpowered pumps on high-frequency routes wear faster. Oversized pumps on low-volume routes create control problems at the delivery point.

Tip 4: Understand the Chassis GVW and Load Management

A propane tank truck operates at full GVW for significant portions of its service life. The chassis you specify needs to handle that load across the full range of road conditions your drivers encounter — not just on highway runs, but on rural dirt roads, farm lanes, and construction access routes.

Calculate your loaded truck weight: chassis, tank body, propane at capacity, tools and equipment, and driver. That number must come in under the chassis GVW rating with margin. Marginal GVW compliance creates structural stress, accelerated tire wear, and DOT exposure. Get the GVW calculation right before you order.

Tip 5: Require ASME-Certified Pressure Vessel Construction

The propane tank on a bobtail truck is an ASME-certified pressure vessel, built and tested to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. This is not optional and it's not negotiable — it's the baseline certification that allows the tank to be legally used for propane transport in the United States.

When evaluating a propane tank truck manufacturer, confirm that their tanks are ASME-stamped and that the certification documentation is complete and transferable. ASME stamps must be visible on the tank nameplate. A manufacturer who can't produce clear ASME documentation is a manufacturer whose tanks should not carry your product.

Amthor builds all propane bobtail tanks to ASME certification standards. Every tank leaves Gretna with complete documentation.

Tip 6: Factor the Service Network Into Your Manufacturer Decision

A propane tank truck that's down during peak heating season costs you revenue on every day it's not running. The manufacturer's service support and parts availability is a real operational variable — not a secondary consideration after price and specs.

Before you order, ask the manufacturer: What's the lead time on your most commonly replaced pump components? Where are your authorized service locations relative to my operating territory? What documentation do you provide that a local diesel shop can use to service the truck if needed?

The answers tell you whether you're buying a truck or buying a relationship with a manufacturer who stands behind what they build.

Tip 7: Act on the 2027 Emissions Deadline Before It Acts on You

The 2027 EPA heavy-duty engine emissions standards change the aftertreatment system on every new commercial truck engine. For propane bobtails running short-haul, high-stop routes, the new SCR/DPF systems introduce complexity that affects maintenance cost, uptime, and driver workflow.

The Cummins L9 platform — a dominant engine for propane bobtails — is transitioning to the new emissions architecture for 2027 production. Pre-emission L9 units are available now. When that inventory is gone, the next truck you order carries the new system.

If you're planning a fleet addition in the next 18 months, the emissions timing belongs in your order decision today. Amthor has pre-emission chassis in inventory. The window closes when the units are gone, not when the calendar hits 2027.
